History and Origin of CRWTH

CRWTH is a string instrument similar to a lyre, but played with a bow. People used to call this instrument Chorus, Crotta, Crouth, later Crowd or Rote. Crwth is mainly associated with Wales and medieval folk music in England.

Some sources cite CRWTH as a Celtic instrument, reminiscent of today's violin.

Ancestor of Lyres and Guitars?

According to the Britannica Encyclopedia, CRWTH is the first development step and predecessor of Cithary, as the shoulders and the crossbar of the instrument have been complemented and replaced by a body-bound fingerboard, as is the case with today's guitars. This also cuts the number of strings, as each string could produce multiple tones.

Several historical pieces of this instrument have been preserved to this day. And thanks to them it is possible to produce their modern copies.

Construction of CRWTH

Crwth consists of a relatively simple "box" construction, characterized by a slightly arched back and fretless fingerboard. It contains 6 strings, which are played by a string with the supposed traditional tuning in tones: g g c c c c d c.

Today's use in traditional work

Thanks to modern reconstructions of CRWTH, it has been used by several creators of folk and traditional music - such as Cass Meurig, Bob Evans, Dan Morris and others.

History and origin of Tagelharp

Tagelharp (tail-hair harp) is one of the string's historical types of lyres. It is also commonly called Talharpa or Stråkharpa. It is similar and related to the Finnish instrument Jouhikko and the Welsh Crwth.

Origin of Talharpa:

Originally from Northern Europe. Already during the Vikings and especially after the end of the Vikings era, Tagelharp spread to the whole Scandinavian region. Originally, the name Tagelharpa may originate from the word Tagel - horse mane - from which the strings for this instrument were originally made.

The existence of Tagelharp in Scandinavia has been documented during the Middle Ages by various archaeological and artistic resources dating back to the 12th - 14th centuries.

It is still used today in many Nordic territories - especially in the Estonian Islands, where they consider it a traditional tool.

Composition and construction of Tagelharp

The original Tagelharp had four strings and a shorter body. Gradually, her body lengthened and one string lost - three strings left. Some today's manufacturers produce four-string versions, others produce three-string versions. The strings were originally made from horse mane.

Tagelharpa is played with the help of a string.

Tagelharp has a hollow body. There are seven holes in the body - from the smallest to the largest, forming a semicircle together.
